Pick of the Week 9/7/20

This week’s pick is the site WideOpenSchool. It prides itself on being having “Free learning activities. Hand-selected and open to all.” It is completely searchable and has a wide variety of subjects to choose from that cover all age ranges from Pre-K to 12th grade.

K-2nd Grades

I thought that today I would focus on Life Skills. For the first link I chose for K-2 a cooking link (maybe because it’s time for breakfast and I’m hungry?) I was able to quickly find a few activities that were easy to follow and looked fun for kids to try! This weeks K-2 pick is…

3rd – 5th Grades

In the Life Skills area I found a cool game created by Google called “Interland”. In it you “explore four islands that cover key digital citizenship topics like protecting privacy, sharing safely, and being kind online.” It was fun and I got a little hooked… My score for the first level was 345! Just sayin…

Finally for 6-8th I found a game (I’m sensing a pattern here) called Quandary. This game helps kids ” stretch your skills in critical thinking, taking another perspective, and decision-making.” I liked this game because it’s in comic book format and there’s quite a bit of reading involved. For a literacy activity this is great! One suggestion I have for you is to turn off the music on the game. It gets a little annoying after a few minutes…

In the game you choose the character you play (either male or female). Kids are asked to create a login to play the game. This is a requirement to play more adventures. With the login, kids can join “contests” within several of the lessons. You get points in each for decisions that you make. I played the first lesson and thought it was pretty cool. It’s been around for a while (2016) and reviews are positive.
