STEM Programs

Girls in STEM

Women make up only 28% of the US STEM workforce. This is a problem. The Columbia STEM Alliance has taken some time to explore the “why” behind this issue and we are dedicated to helping solve it. What we’ve found and what research shows, is that young women of all populations are interested in STEM fields. They want to grow up to be doctors, scientists, architects, engineers, and so on. They crave being creative. They are intelligent. They work well under pressure. They want to take on the world and win. These women have everything it takes to be the best in any field they pursue. We know that. We just need them to know that!

Our Girls in STEM program is an after-school club designed to help the young women in our community build confidence and get involved in the world of STEM. Are you or is someone you know a woman in a STEM field? If you’d like to support the next generation of amazing women in STEM, reach out! We’d love to learn from you!

STEAM Bus

The STEAM Bus is an innovative project which helps children grasp scientific concepts through fun and learning. Through the support of Columbia Public Schools, the STEAM Bus travels to students to bring more STEM-related learning to the classroom and better prepare children for their futures.

The bus can accommodate up to 25 kids at a time and features a variety of tools including 3D printers, virtual reality goggles, and micro:bits. Since it’s inception in 2015, the STEAM Bus has served more than 5,000 students within the district’s elementary and middle schools, as well as in neighboring districts in Boone County.

"My daughters have enrolled in multiple Columbia STEM Alliance courses both during the summer program and fall/winter series. They come home raving about their incredible experiences each and every time. These hands-on learning experiences are both enriching and thought-provoking, often exploring a topic outside of their normal classrooms. I'm elated that my girls have had more exposure to science, technology, engineering and math as well as problem-solving and critical analysis now that these STEM courses are available to students in our community. We will be signing up for many more."

Math Mentorship Program

We are currently working collaboratively with 5th and 6th grade teachers to support students in advanced mathematics at Columbia Public Schools STEM schools, Benton Elementary and Jefferson Middle, a STEAM Academy. Our overall goal is to increase the number of underserved students in advanced mathematics and to increase access to STEM careers. Currently supporting STEM through classroom mentors and tutoring during student’s intervention time.
